To "Self Empty" by Ronald Rolheiser

To "self empty"
in the way Jesus is described
as doing
means being present
without demanding
that your presence be recognized
and its
importance acknowledged;
it means giving without demanding
that your generosity
be reciprocated;
it means being invitational
rather than coercive;
it means being vulnerable
and helpless,
unable to protect yourself against
the pain
of being taken for granted
or rejected;
it means living in a great patience
that does not demand intervention,
Divine or human,
when things do not unfold
according to your will;
it means letting God be God
and others be themselves
without either having to submit
to your wishes or your timetable.
•     Maxim 3:  “Empty yourself in honor of the Incarnate Word who emptied himself with so much
                    love for you. (Phil 2:7)  Make it your commitment to live in the practice of the most
                    sincere, true, and profound humility possible to you.

•     Maxims of Perfection, Chapter II, 3:  “A heart empty of all is, at the same time, full of God.”
“Our charism… sends us into the world as continuous acts of love, a love that is active and inclusive, patient and enduring, fearless and tender, forgiving and giving, steady and steadfast. It forms bridges, makes connections easier and facilitates life for others, enabling them also to stir up love in our world.” Sister Marcia Allen, CSJ Concordia, KS
